A hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which the hair transplant surgeon and team move the hair grafts from the back of the scalp to the front and top area of the head, which is affected by hair loss or baldness. In the process of hair transplantation, the hair follicles are safely implanted under the recipient area of the scalp. The risk of infection in this treatment is pretty low and the reason behind that is the utilization of hair grafts from the patient’s donor area. That means the patient’s own hair follicles are implanted to the patient’s recipient area.

The recovery time of hair transplant depends on person to person. Some may take less time to recover, while some may have to maintain their patience for a longer period. Here, recovery means the time taken to heal the wounds and also the time taken by the patients to resume their normal day to day activities. Talking about the time required for the hair transplant recovery, it will take approximately 7 – 10 days until there are no signs that you’ve had the surgery.

The last reminder of the hair transplant surgery is the scabs over the graft. These scabs generally take around seven to ten days to fall out. The falling out of scabs is an important phase and you need to let them fall on their own. During this period, you may suffer from mild pain, swelling, itchiness or numbness in the donor as well as recipient area. You can consult with your doctor if you’ll suffer any of these problems and your doctor will provide you with the required medications such as pain killers and antibiotics.

Below mentioned are some of the instructions that you need to follow during the recovery period of hair transplant:

  • Proper dressing should be done at the clinic only.

  • Take your medications on time.

  • Eat healthy food and do not take the medicines empty stomach.

  • Avoid any kind of heavy physical activity like gym, weight lifting, running, etc.

  • Do not scratch the transplanted area.

  • Follow a proper sleeping pattern by using a soft pillow.

  • Along with the recipient area, you need to look after your donor area as well.

  • Avoid your head from the exposure of direct sunlight.

  • Strictly avoid alcohol and smoking for 2 - 3 weeks after the surgery.

  • You should cover your head with a hat or you can take an umbrella while stepping out of the home.

In brief, you may require a rest period of 3 – 4 days after the surgery. Afterward, you can indulge yourself into normal routine activities. Within 4 – 5 months after the hair transplant procedure, you’ll notice small hair growth on the transplanted area. It will take around 8 – 10 months to get the fuller and natural-looking hairs on your head.
